• I have been UBC Google Ambassador for the past 2 years - you may have seen me organizing pizza events, pie parties and movie nights!
• I have been working with Sun MicroSystems as the campus ambassador since 2008.
• I organized UBC OSUM Club which offers Free Java trainings for students!
• I have been working with UBC IEEE club as Computer Science Rep since 2008
• I been involved in many events inside and outside the department such as CSSS, Live-in-for-literacy, End breast cancer and more and I always enjoy volunteering and helping my peers

Why Nadia?

Because I have been working closely with the department and students societies, I am familiar with students needs:

• My mission is to help students to get more involved with the department by making CSSS a friendly environment that will be welcoming for all the students!
• I plan to get the department and faculty more involved with students through various social events.
• I want to re-implement the volunteer tutoring system ( students would tutor and help each other on courses as well as gaining experience on tutoring)
• I want to make sure that every student has fair access to resources and I hope to develop a network of students helping other students!

Kevin Moore

My name is Kevin Moore and I am running for CSSS President

My past experiences with the CSSS include:

• Last year I took over for the Social Coordinator position and helped out with all sorts of events including beer gardens, and BBQS.
• Last year I was also the CSSS SUS representative. I organized our booth in the SUB during Science Week as well as organizing a Guitar Hero tournament during the week.
• Volunteering with various events such as cooking at BBQs, serving at licensed events.
• This year I am in charge of the CSSS annual clothing order which is currently being processed well ahead of schedule.

If elected I will:

• Work with the faculty and industry to bring the students info sessions, industry panels and networking opportunities.
• Ensure that we have another successful career fair
• Ensure that a sensible and fair locker management system is in place for the students.
• Continue organizing a variety of social events for CS students, including our barbecues, beer gardens, and the annual boat cruise along with other events.
• Increasing the visibility of the CSSS within the CS student body.
• Continue to bridge the gap between the faculty and the student body.
• Help to integrate smaller interest groups within the CSSS such as the Game Development Association

However, without your vote I cannot make any of this happen. This will be my last year as a student at UBC and I want to make it memorable, not only for myself, but for all CS students.

Hey!

I would be a fantastic president! I have the experience to actually implement the change needed. I have been involved with the CSSS since I began my program and have been an executive over the last 3 years. I can’t promise you the world but I can promise that I will do everything in my power to ensure that the CSSS operates in your best interests. I will make it a priority to elicit feedback about events and programs the CSSS is hosting so that they reflect what students want. I have a deep understanding of how the society operates. As President, I want to be open to students and be a figure that they can turn to when they need help academically, socially and personally so that I may help them address their issues. If I were elected, I would focus on:

1. Increasing academic support such as FREE tutoring services for computer science students. Computer science students face employment pressures in today’s economy and we need to ensure that our graduates are adequately prepared to enter the field.
2. Creating social networks among current students and alumni to foster a strong community that extends beyond the classroom. This allows students the opportunity to create valuable connections that helps them establish themselves in the industry or helps them obtain research positions.
3. Ensuring that student representatives engage with their department and constituents to address pertinent issues faced by students instead of simply voting on council.

Ryan Giuliany

The CSSS is great. My goal is to make it better.

I’m just finishing my 3rd year in a Combined Honours in CPSC and Microbiology, and am looking forward to coming back next year. For me, next year is all about growth and improvement. I’m finishing up my B. Sc., winding down classes and focusing instead on my undergrad thesis. Now what does that mean to you, deciding on your VP: Internal? It means that most of my time next year is unscheduled. It means that even though I’ve got research to do, and my thesis to write, I will have time to give to the CSSS when it’s needed; not “I can’t do it now, I have class”.

The other asset that I can bring to the position is a very different perspective than many CS students. Being in Combined Honours program means that I spend a lot of time with Microbi students and MISA (the Microbi student society), and I get to see what they’re up to. We all know Microbi students are a bit of a whacky bunch, but they have some great ideas for their student society. They also have some terrible ones. That’s the perspective I can bring. I can see what they try, see what works and what doesn’t, and use that for the CSSS.

I am committed to helping the CSSS continue to grow and improve.

Hey everyone!  My name is Jré (yes, like Java Runtime Environment :p) and I’m running for Vice President Internal for the CSSS.

During the past year I was Vice President Social for the CSSS.  We hosted a variety of events, such as bzzr gardens, game nights, laser tag, bowling, BBQs and the year end boat cruise.  In the year to come, I would like to have a more profound impact on the CSSS and its members.  This is why I am running for Vice President Internal.

If elected I would aim to:

• Improve relationships between students and faculty
• Increase the variety of items sold by the CSSS to include pizza pops, waffles and trail mix
• Organize a fair and cheap locker rental system

Hi, everyone. My name is Eason Hu. I am a 3rd year Computer Science student at UBC. I was working at Radical Entertainment as a tool programmer for 8 months. Other than that, I’ve been working as a Senior Peer to organize social events for peers in the International Peer Program (IPP) since 2008. Before that, I was an IT executive in Association of Chinese Graduate (ACG) for two years. I love ballroom and hip-hop dances, though games are a major part of my life. And most importantly, I have the initiative to RUN the next CSSS Social Vice President!

Luke Yin

Hi. My name is Luke Yin and I want to be your VP Social. During the past year, there haven’t been many CSSS social events. Sure, there was the occasional barbecue, a bit of bowling, laser tag… but what else? The bzzr gardens only happened at the end of each term, and there were no LAN parties.

Now the thing is, we are supposed to have a lot more events than what we’ve had over the past year. It says so on the website, the AMS insider… and every other source out there.

If I’m elected, there will be a bzzr garden, a LAN party, AND an extra social event (e.g. laser tag, ice skating, etc.) every month. And barbecues will happen every two weeks. I’ll also make sure CSSS events don’t conflict with anything, so you won’t ever have to decide which event to go to.

Vote for me if you want all this to happen. And I won’t let you down… I promise.

Hey CPSC Students! My name is Alden Salgado and I am running for Vice President, Volunteering Services. You’re probably wondering why I would even bother creating a write-up, considering that I am the only candidate. However, I am THAT ecstatic in taking this position!
Volunteer tutoring services, faculty promotion at local high schools, mini-carnivals for charity – these are just a taste of what is to come. The possibilities are absolutely endless! However, my first agenda is to start-up a volunteering committee dedicated to putting these ideas into fruition. The journey will definitely not be an easy one but the rewards will be, well, rewarding! Ultimately, the goal is for every CPSC student to have some involvement in these initiatives, whether it is through participating, volunteering, or even coordinating. Hi everyone. First of all thank you for reading through all of these write-ups and thank you for taking an interest in who is running for what position. I will not keep your attention for long. Since you already know my name (it is at the top!) I shall skip that part as well.

Now a little about why I’m running: I’m currently in my second to last year in UBC. Yes, next year is going to be my 5th (and final) year here. For the past two terms I have worked with CSSS as a year representative, so I know a good deal about the inner workings of the society. During that time I have realised that I want to contribute my time, knowledge and experience to this wonderful group of students. When considering what position to run I realised that I had the most experience dealing with money. For the past two years I have managed to run a successful painting franchise through which I have learned how to effectively manage money and how to make even a modest budget go a very, very long way. As such I hope that you will allow me to put my experience and knowledge to good use – and vote “Aleks for Treasurer”!

Leemor Yuravlivker

Hey everyone! My name is Leemor Yuravlivker. I will be a second-year student next year and I want to be your next CSSS treasurer! I am currently doing the Combined Computer Science and Business program (which means yes, I have had to suffer through financial accounting).
A few random facts about me:

• The Sims is my all-time favorite computer game (I’m stoked for the Sims 3 coming out this June)
• I lived in Uruguay and Ecuador for 6 years before coming to Vancouver
• I take a Capoeira class (Brazilian martial arts)

Being part of the CSSS would be awesome for me because our department is full of fun and creative people, whom I am eager to meet. Hi Everyone,
My name is Vlad Zaharia and I am running for CSSS President.
Why should you vote for me?

• 2 Years experience in the CSSS as a Social Coordinator, Publications Officer, Sites of Change member, and member in Department Committees (Computing and Outreach).
• Microsoft Student Partner for Term One, where I collaborated with Microsoft to promote products, services, and events throughout the campus.
• Volunteered in various CSSS and Department events, including Movie Nights, LAN Parties, and Tech Trek.

What will I do?

• Ensure that our various events (Food Sales, Game Nights, Boat Cruise, etc) continue to be a success.
• Work with the Industry to ensure that our career fair is highly attended and successful. Continue working with the department and industry to bring events that benefit students, such as more industry panels and information sessions.
• Collaborate with the industry to allow students to have tours of the work environments at different Vancouver-based companies.

Vice President, Administration: Sang-Jung (Sean) Lee

My name is Sean and I’m running for VP Admin for CSSS this year. I’ve worked very hard this year as a VP Social, bringing you more BBQs and Pizza Sales than the CSSS has ever had, and finding sufficient funds to put off some great events like the Robot Party and the first ever Starcraft 2 tournament at UBC. But more importantly, the CSSS collaborated with other clubs on campus, bridging strong connections and setting us up for even better events for the years to come. It’s been a lot of stress, pressure, but it’s been a ride, despite this being my first year at the Cube.
Next year, I hope to continue my involvement but would like to take a step back as the VP Admin. As one of the only two returning execs, I’m sure I’d be valuable in any position, but being VP Admin position will provide me the flexibility I need to avoid jeopardizing my other activities while staying at the Cube. I’m currently the VP Admin of the UBC Starcraft Club as well.

Vice President, Communications: Kevin Miller

I am a first year computer science student who is interested in being the Vice President, Communications of the Computer Science Student Society. As VP Communications I will work to keep you informed and up to date on the many events hosted by The Cube, as well as contribute to the overall running of The Cube. I am reliable and hardworking, and will make sure I do a good job.
A little bit about myself. In my free time I play a lot of video games, as well as program. I am interested in game design, and have programmed many small games for fun. I usually hang around the computer science building, and am always up for a game. One day I hope to gain super cow powers.

Since the beginning I’ve been involved with the cube, first as a social coordinator and later as the VP Internal. From my years of experience I have gathered a strong understanding of the way the Cube works and how all its members are awesome and diverse. The first time I visited the Career Fair was in my 2nd Year, at the time it felt like it was something that was still far off and was not part of my list of worries. However, being at the Career Fair filled me with an overwhelming sense of inspiration and awe as I saw all these huge companies marketing themselves towards students and trying to recruit the best of the lot. After my experience of applying to jobs through the co-op program, I can say that it is truly amazing how beneficial it can be to have a good conversation with a recruiter.
I want to provide everyone with the chance to meet face to face with potential employers and see for themselves how coveted and talented they are in the market. I promise to plan a Career Fair that will include the industry’s best companies and allow students to expand their network, so vote Richard Lo for Vice President External!

My name is Kerry, and I’m running for VP Internal for the CSSS. I’ve been involved in the CSSS for 3 years now – 2 of them as an Office Manager for the Cube. I estimate that I have spent roughly 6 hours a day in the Cube, every school day, for these past 3 years. Given this experience, I believe I have the ability to perform well as VP Internal.

If elected, I will continue to keep the Cube’s services available to you, including:

• Keeping the Cube open as long as we can
• Keeping the Cube stocked with food and drinks, sold to you as cheap as possible

Hi, my name is Omri Wallach and I’m running for Vice President - Social of the Computer Science Society. Last year I transferred to UBC from Western Ontario, and I tried to get involved right away. I am currently a Social Coordinator for the Computer Science Society, and I’m hoping to be elected to the Social position to continue and improve upon what I’ve learned while being here. I want to continue having events such as barbecues and pizza sales, as it is always nice to provide cheap, tasty food to Comp. Sci students. As well, the board game nights, LAN sessions, dance party with Cogs, and any other events represent a fun way to relax and socialize outside of class. My name is AKSHAT DIVEKAR and I am a second year CS student running for the position of VP External for the upcoming year. About me, I have strong team working and networking skills, with an ability to lead and work collaboratively. I have also participated in some CSSS initiatives in the past, such as sites of change and simply appreciate the events that the CSSS organizes for us, from monthly barbeques to the career fair and the tech talks. Talking about my experience, I have held executive positions at various clubs in the past and am currently a Webmaster at another club, a tutor for SOS while also being a teaching assistant for CPSC 210. Apart from that, I am always interested in learning about and trying out new things, whatever they may be. I love watching movies and documentaries, designing websites and listening to music (currently learning drums!).
